'Jane Bom-Bane in Your Classroom' is a local artist project for Key Stages 1 and 2. It is a cross-curricular workshop demonstrating the link between technology and the arts. The workshop aims to encourage enjoyment of, and participation in, live music, poetry, song and design. Follow-up work develops the imagination through poetry-writing, singing, design and technology.
Jane Bom-Bane performs original poetry and song to the accompaniment of harmonium and guitar. She designs mechanical hats and props which illustrate her songs. Children are encouraged to play along to the songs with percussion instruments and join in the choruses. Storylines and lyrics are explained and discussed during the performance.
After the performance, the basic workings of the acoustic instruments and the illuminated/motorised hats are explained clearly and simply. Pupils are invited to talk about their own experiences/examples of the above. All comments, questions, smiles, nods of the head etc. are acknowledged and valued so that every child will feel included in the session.
The workshop can be:
* Free-standing: 1 day/ 1-off
session
* On-going:
follow-up work in the classroom, eg: The children will be invited to send their
own letters, poems, drawings or designs: On-going correspondence with the
artist either by conventional letter or use of email. Diagrams and worksheets
will be available on the janebombane website from April.
* Follow-on: pupils will have the
opportunity to produce creative work and/or prepare for a performance. There
will be an opportunity for schools to work with three artists in a 'carousel'
style: lyrics/poetry, music/melody and design/technology.
Jane offers a preliminary discussion/visit so that the workshop can be focused according to class teachers' requirements.
